Dear Reader,
I, as a prostate cancer survivor, would like to share with you my experience being under the care of Dr. Kevin Slawin in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and follow up care.
I live in Nacogdoches, Texas, and after two locally done negative biopsies and a persistently rising PSA, sought an experience, qualified Urological specialist. Dr. Slawin was recommended by a Radiation Oncologist physician friend. I looked at Dr. Slawin’s credentials and practice and decided that his was the right “team”, John Dodge, PA-C, and Pat Meyers, RN.
I was biopsied, informed timely of positive results, and offered robotic or open surgery. I am a practicing physician and desired to evaluate all of my options prior to committing to Dr. Slawin’s solution. After researching and realizing how qualified and caring he and his team are, I chose to undergo robotic prostatectomy and was scheduled promptly. Dr. Slawin, John Dodge & Pat Meyers answered all of my questions and prepared me for this operation, potential complications, and the surgical recovery period.
I really feel that the research portion of Dr. Slawin’s practice enhances the patient experience and improves overall patient care and survival.
After surgery and recuperation, I have been cared for in a continued superior fashion, and John Dodge has facilitated good communication efficiently and expediently from Dr. Slawin’s office. I have also been able to get my ultra sensitive PSA follow up tests done locally to minimize my time in Houston. I have several local friends who have also utilized Dr. Slawin with excellent results and great satisfaction. I continue down the pathway of healing, but continue to read about all aspects of prostate cancer care regularly, and the literature states that a physician who has done 50 or less robotic surgeries is not yet considered “skillful”. Dr. Slawin’s experience and skill helped me, as I had prostate cancer and hypertrophy (enlargement) – with the 3rd largest gland up to that time per his research statistics, and he was able to successfully complete the robotic surgery for me with extra time and effort.
I remain with an undetectable PSA almost two years from diagnosis.
Evaluate your options, but know you will not find a better physician, surgeon, friend, and skilled team to assist you in your battle against prostate cancer.
